Flipped class? What does it mean and how does it work?

 Hello everyone,

Today, we will explore the concept of the flipped classroom approach—a teaching strategy that I, too, was unfamiliar with until our professor, Gökçe Kurt, assigned us a group project to create a flipped classroom video.

For this project, I collaborated with my friends Elif Karagöz and Derya Geçirgen. The three of us faced a learning curve as we worked to understand what a "flipped classroom" truly entails. We reviewed various examples of flipped classroom models, examined the resources and materials shared by our professor, and gradually developed our own version of this approach.

Our professor provided us with valuable insights into her own experiences with the flipped classroom technique. She shared that she had implemented this teaching method years ago as part of an experimental study. In her research, she divided students into two groups: an experimental group, which followed the flipped classroom method, and a control group, which used traditional teaching techniques. Her reflections on this experience underscored the potential benefits of this approach, particularly in fostering student engagement and promoting independent learning.

From my perspective, the flipped classroom approach is highly effective, especially in today’s technology-driven world. This method integrates technology seamlessly into the learning process, encouraging students to engage with educational videos and adopt a computer-assisted learning style. Such an approach not only helps students stay aligned with technological advancements but also fosters self-paced learning and critical thinking.

As educators, staying updated with technological advancements and incorporating them into teaching should be a top priority. The implementation of technology in education is no longer optional but rather an essential aspect of modern pedagogy. By leveraging methods like the flipped classroom, teachers can create more interactive, engaging, and effective learning environments for their students.
